The 150-year legacy of Ortega began with Maria Conception Jacinta Dominguez Ortega, affectionately known as Mama Ortega. Her remarkable culinary skills did far more than just unite her family; they served as the backdrop for a significant turning point in the family’s journey. It was in the heart of Mama's kitchen that her 11th child, Emilio, laid the groundwork for Ortega Chile Packing Company.

Emilio’s passion for chilies ignited upon his relocation to New Mexico in 1890, where he discovered the state's famed big red chilies. His love affair with these vibrant peppers deepened, and upon returning to California a few years later, he brought back chili pepper seeds along with a treasure trove of recipes for the delectable dishes he had learned to prepare in New Mexico.

Back at their homestead, an adobe house nestled in Ventura, California, Emilio wasted no time in planting the chili seeds. Thriving in Ventura’s temperate climate, the chilies flourished, resulting in a bountiful harvest. Soon, he had an abundance of chilies, compelling him to share them with friends and neighbors who raved about their incredible flavor. It was at that moment Emilio realized he had stumbled upon something extraordinary.

Fast forward to 2003, when B&G Foods acquired the Ortega brand. Echoing Emilio Ortega's longstanding dedication to quality, B&G Foods upholds that same commitment today.
